PREVIEW 1 -  B2B LONG COURSE
Big team back for 2010 NAB B2B long Course Challenge:
With enteries still rolling in for the NAB B2B CycloSportif the scene looks set for another might battle amoung the top cycling team for the prestigious long course B2B title.

After dominating the placings in 2009, Australian Continental team Drapac Porsche will be back to tackle the 2010 NAB B2B long Course. Last year local Pro cyclist Dean Windsor and National Champion Peter McDonald starred in a Drapac Porsche Quinella, something Joe Lewis and 2009 Australian junior national road  champion Michael Phelan will try to emulate in 2010 for the Drapac Porsche team.

However there are a number of other teams keen to prevent the back to back Drapac Porsche after strong performances last year. Budget Forklifts, Fly v and McDonough Blake are all back in 2010 with plenty of experience and speed to feature in the placings.

Third placegetter from last year Alistair Loutit (McDonough Blake) is back with a very strong team which includes former Drapac Porsche Rider Robbie Williams, Scott Cronly-Dillon and hard riding Adam Phelan. While Budget Forklifts Blair Windsor also finished in the top ten last year and is keen to back that up with another solid performance this year.

Maybe the inform rider going into the event this year is Cameron Peterson who won a stage at the Tasmanian National series event last weekend. Peterson rides for the big budget Virgin Blue/Morgans team and is due for a change in luck at the Bathurst event after experiencing a number of mishaps in the past.

The recently formed Bike Bugs team look to have a very competitive team at Bathurst with Alex Malone back from a win at the OCBC Cycle Singapore event plus recently signed local rider Craig Hutton. While the young RAK team have always performed well at Bathurst with Sam Spokes and Kevin Hawes expected to perform strongly. 2007 winner Glenn Stojanow will be back looking for a second win, while going back even further into past Bathurst form Peter Hatton and Robert Hodgson return to Bathurst after podium finishes in NSW Road Championship events on Mt Panorama, with Hatton also a podium finisher in the Canadian Tour de Beauce.

Which Course - the long or the short? -2010 Short Chort B2B Event.
With the 2010 B2B NAB CycloSportif Challenge only a couple of weeks away, many past competitors have tussled with the question “Which Course, the long or the short?”.

There is no doubt that the 70km Sportif event is sensible yet still very challenging task, and there are a few things to consider before embarking on the 110km long Course.

Besides the extra 40kms, the earlier start, and the stronger opposition, the riders tackling the NAB Long Course have the extra challenge of Rockley Mount.
This year the Bathurst regional council has sealed the infamous Dirt Section on the Mount, however the climb remains a critical point in the long course challenge.

It seems the leading competitors from last years Short course event are divided on which challenge to undertake in 2010. Less than a second separated the top 3 finishes in the Short course last year with Stewart Campbell, Ryan O’Donnell and Julian Hamill crossing the finish line in 1:51:45, yet this year the trio have different thoughts on their 2010 goals with Campbell (Eastern Suburbs) staying in the short course event, Bathurst’s Ryan O’Donnell and Sydney Junior Julian Hamill moving up to the Long Course Event.

Young Manning Valley cyclist Joshua Blick is another who performed well in last years short course event with a top ten finish in 1:54:04, Blick will return to contest the short course again in 2010. Similarly the fastest female competitor from the 2009 short course Gail Pearson (Eurobodalla) will return to contest the 70km event again this year.

After an impressive display winning short course team section in 2009, the super team of Dennis Martin, Dan Watson and Steve Bennett will again race the short course team category in 2010. The trio worked together for the entire race last year, helping each other through a number of individual race set backs, including the dreaded puncture. Their experience and tactics will see the local trio a big chance of back to back titles in the team category in 2010.

Clearly the Question of which event to contest is assessed differently by different individuals, and is why the Rotary Club of Bathurst Daybreak has provided the two options plus a shorter Family Challenge. With all cyclists able to set an achievable goal and work on their personal challange in NAB B2B Challenge what ever level it may be.

Saturday Criterium great for the Spectators:
For pure spectator action at the Rotary of Bathurst Daybreaks big NAB B2B cycling promotion you can’t beat the exciting Saturday (10.04.10) program at Mt Panorama. The day consist of the NSW Hill climb Championship in the morning and the thrilling NSW State Road Series Criteriums in the afternoon at the Mt Panorama’s Pit complex.
Last years Elite A division Criterium was won by Bathurst’s Dean Windsor who is currently racing overseas, however the rest of the 2009 placegetters have returned to Mt Panorama to form an excellent field. Add to that Australian Track Champion Scott Law and his Virgin Blue team mate Cameron Peterson plus a number of the up and coming Juniors and the scene is set for a top race on the big criterium cuircuit in the pit complex.
Drapac Porsche are keen to continue there excellent record at Bathurst with last years runner up Joe Lewis and 4th placegetter Tom Palmer targeting the event, add to that the team leading performer at the recent Singapore Circuit event Michael Phelan
and the Drapac Porsche team looks set to again fire in 2010. After making the podium last year in third place Bathurst Blair Windsor (Team Budget Forklifts) will be marked heavily by the big teams this year, but after an excellent showing in the recent Perth Criterium series will be considered a contender.
Maybe the team with the most depth is the Trent Wilson managed McDonough Blake Team who will look firstly to attack with riders like Adam Phelan, Alastair Loutit and Robbie Williams before switching to plan B and setting up Dale Scarfe at the finish. New NRS team Bike Bug will be in the action at the A Division criterium with another Bathurst rider Craig Hutton likely to be in contention along with former Commonwealth Games performer Dave Treacy and Alex Malone. While it will be interesting to see the form of former “2 wheel industry” riders Ben Hill and John Edeling at the race along with former American profession team rider Peter Hutton.
However most of the pre-race talk among the teams is whether Aussie Champ and recent Husky Crit winner Scott Law will ride the Mt Panorama Criterium. Back from help fellow speedster Ben Kerstin win in Singapore, Law has entered the Hill climb in the morning but yet to confirm a start in the afternoon event. Certainly his Virgin Blue team mate Cameron Peterson will ensure a solid pace is set in the A Division event after a strong display in the recent national series event in Tasmania.

Seniors showing the way in the 2010 NAB B2B:
Part of the reason for the present growth in cycling is the lower impact of the activity when taking on a training program. The ageing population has seen an unprecedented  growth in the veterans cycling ranks as the work discovers the pleasures of the bicycle based exercise program. Two of the more inspirational senior cyclists in this years NAB B2B Cyclo Sportif are locals Margaret Cady and Geoffrey Hawkins.

Back on the bike after a health scare Geoffrey Hawkins is well into his 80’s, and one focused and determined cyclist, using the bike to keep his mind and body active after the death of his wife a couple of years ago. Although riding the 70km Cyclo Sportif on the Sunday it’s the previous days Nsw Hill Climb Championship that he is focusing on.

Being about a decade older that any other rider in the state title Geoffrey is a winner at the starting line, however getting a NSW Champions Medal is dependant on how the authorities combine the age divisions to make up the field. State officials could possibly combine up to 4 age divisions leaving Geoffrey to race competitors over 20years younger than himself.
It remains to be seen whether Geoffrey can be competitive under those arrangements, however no one disagrees racing up Mt panorama on a bicycle at well over 80 years old deserves a medal.

In the women’s event the local area boosts a number of top class masters performers including World Champion Rosemary Hastings. However another with a bag of cycling trophies and able to defy the aging process is Margaret Cady. Having ridden the B2B Cyclo Sportif in the past with her sporting identity grandchildren, Margaret is training very well this year and looks set to shock everyone with the time she is capable of posting in 2010. Coached and supported by master trainer and husband George this former national champion cyclist looks set to embarrass plenty of rider in the prime of their live with her time on the weekend.
Peterson number 1 seed in the hill climb:
2009 State Champ Cameron Peterson is favoured to make it back to back state title in the open men’s state hill Climb title at Mt panorama on the weekend. The Virgin Blue team rider is seeded no 1 in the open mens category however looks to have a real battle on his hands for the days fastest time with Drapac Porsche’s Joe Lewis.
In 2009 Lewis set the fastest time of the day with now Gamin professional Lachy Morton when winning the Under 23’s age class. Both Lewis and Morton recording 8 Minutes 37sec, four seconds faster that Peterson time in the open men category. Lewis is seeded 1 in the under 23s start list and is confident of breaking his 2009 personal best time this year.

Record numbers expected at NAB B2B Challenge Weekend:
With record on line entries again this years for the Rotary Club of Bathurst Daybreak’s giant NAB 2010 B2B Cycling Weekend, the CEO of Cycling NSW Kevin Young has advised all cyclists to arrive a minimum 1 hour prior to your start time to get adequately prepared for their respective event.
Each rider will have a timing chip that has to be fitted to their bicycle to record their ride time, while all participants need to check the normal things such as their tyre pressures, fill water bottles and organise race food for the ride. On top of that are the extra logistical issues of such a large field and so many varied level and ages competing together. Cycling NSW suggesting to allow time for the start as riders will be leaving in waves of 200 based on the average speeds indicated when entering the event.
Past events suggest that all participants in the Cyclo Sportif events need to consider adequate spares for the ride, this year puncture likelihood is lower due to the road up Rockley Mount being sealed in the long course event, and the less favourable conditions for the dreaded cat-head thorns, but be warned they are still out there.
