Preface - The successful break away group of 18 fought it out to the finish line with Jonathan Cantwell and Chris Sutton kicking clear in the sprint to fight out the finish. Cantwell taking the win with Chris Sutton second and Gene Bates third.
Stage 1: Ballarat to Ballarat, Monday 12th October 09, 149km
The first road Stage of the 2009 Jayco Herald Sun Tour was an 149km course which started and finished in Ballarat. Lone breakway Stu Shaw was caught on the run into Ballarat with the stage caming down to a sprint where former Tour de France legend Jaan Kirsipuu showed he has still got it at 40years of age defeating Garmin’s Chris Sutton and Fly V’s Jono Cantwell
Stage 2: Colac to Warrnambool , Tuesday 13th October 09, 141km
In a tough day of wind and rain the Jayco Herald Sun Tour finished at the cycling crazy Warrnambool with the high profile international team Garmin showing their power with Chris Sutton taking the win from Fly V’s Jono Cantwell who has taken over the yellow jersey from Tour de France legend Jaan Kirsipuu who slipped back to 7th.
Stage 3: Warrnambool to Apollo Bay, Wednesday 14th October 09, 164km
The drama continued out along the road in stage 3 of the 2009 Herald Sun tour with more crashes in the wet windy conditions including Budget Forklift’s Blair Windsor hit by a team car while riding in the main peloton. Although cleared of any serious injury Windsor had to abandon the Tour which caused plenty of discussion in the managers meeting. The stage featured an early break by Drapac Porsche’s Rhys Pollock, Garmin’s Tom Peterson and Jayco rider Leigh Howard, the trio working well to establish a nice break, however Garmin where keen for a sprint and the bunch reformed in the closing stages for Chris Sutton to take another stage.
Stage 4: Anglesea to Barwon Heads, Thursday 15th October 09, 138km
Again rain and wind made conditions tough in the 4th stage to Barwon Heads, yet it was the two early climbs that split the field in the 140km stage. Michael Matthews (Jayco) and Darren Lapthorne (Rapha Condor) applied the pressure in the middle stages, however under the control of Garmin a bunch of 30 sprinted in out for the stage win, with chris Sutton taking his third win from Fly V rival Jono Cantwell, and Brad Wiggins in third.
Stage 5: Geelong Individual Time Trial, Friday 16th October 09, 10km
Garmin star Brad Wiggins lived up to all the hype in the Stage 5 Time Trial, not only winning the stage but also taking-over the overall lead from team mate Chris Sutton. Second in the stage going to Svein Tuft and third Jelly Belly’s Bernard Van Uldan.
Stage 6: Melbourne Circuit Race, Saturday 17th October 09
With Garmin keen to seal general Classification the pace was on right from the start of the final stage of the 2009 Herald Sun Tour making it very difficult for any of the other teams to create any opportunities in the 15 lap circuit race in Melbourne’s Lygon Street. However in the end the Garmin Train was up staged by a very clever ride by Fly V’s Jono Cantwell taking the win from Matthews and Rock Racings Dave Tanner. The 2009 Herald Sun Tour going to Brad Wiggins with Cantwell taking the Sprinters Jersey, Drapac Porsches Dean Windsor taking the most aggressive jersey in the final Stage.
