Cootamundra Haycarters Handicap - Saturday 08 May 2010
Cootamundra’s Haycarters Cycling Weekend continues to be one if the most popular cycling promotions in NSW, with the annual Handicap drawing capacity fields each year. This year 23minute bunch where given a real chance of holding the lead from start to finish with nice representation from the local Cootamundra club to get the frontmarkers organised and working smoothly.
Sometimes an Intermediate Sprint can interfere with progress of a group, however after Canberra’s  James Welsh claimed the prizemoney the bunch quickly re organised and set its sights on the finish.
Things looking very good for the leaders when the fast moving 5minute group and the backmarkers where held up by a train.  However a race can change very quickly under the Handicap format, and with the big teams (McDonough Blake, Budget Forklifts, North Sydney Elite, Bike Bug, ACTIS and Dulwich Hill) working together suddenly the backmarkers where threaten the leading group which was down to 6 riders.
At the finish the 23 minute group, or what was left of it, held on for a gutsy win, with Sydney riders Paul McMahon and Susan Henry surprising the locals to take the 2010 Coota Haycarters Title in front of the 3 Coota riders Jeffrey Golden, Jeremy Ryan and Charlie Baldry, and Canberra’s James Welsh.
The Backmarkers powering home only seconds behind the six leaders with Budget Forklifts Blair Windsor winning the sprint for 7th and recording fastest time for the event.
Windsor back in NSW after recent racing commitments at Queensland and Western Australia was a little disappointed not to catch the leaders after finishing in the top five last year from the Backmark, but was full of praise for the other back markers who worked hard to have a shot at the win. Impressive McDonough Blake Witness rider Adam Phelan finished 8th and second fastest, with Craig Hutton (Bike Bug) and Chris Williams (Northern Sydney Elite team) rounding out the top 10.
The 60km “Recovery Handicap” is contested on Day 2 of the Weekend and after the problem with the train crossing on day 1, the 5 minute bunch was very keen to feature in the money.
Mudgee’s  Top class triathlete Nic Kastelein (who was a recent CSU student, and will soon leave to race overseas) made the most of his handicap scoring an  impressive win from Mark Harris (Canberra) and Lavington’s Michael Washington.
A number of local cyclists  featuring in the placings with Bruce Goddard (7th) Billy Hutton (8th) and Drew Carter all finishing in the top 10, along with Orange riders Tim Hughes (5th) and  Paul Scherl. Promising Bathurst Club junior and Orange Resident Gus Tobin again impressing at the event finishing second fastest behind Canberra’s Joel Stewart, while Zach Backer (Bathurst) picked up money at his first cycling open when he won the first intermediate Sprint early in the race.

2010 Huskisson Grand Prix
Cycle Teams at Huskisson
Every February the small coastal town of Huskisson south of Wollongong is taken over by Triathletes, hosting one of NSW’s premier triathlon weekends. In recent years the introduction of the Huskisson GP Criterium has seen cycling added to the program, with the 2010 Husky Crit featuring riders from Drapac Porsche, Fly V, Budget Forklifts, McDonagh Blake, Bike Bug and Road Runner.
Using the same L shape bike course as used by the Triathletes in their Pro eliminator there was plenty of hype for the cycling GP, and no shortage of attacks early in the race. Tom Palmer (Drapac Porsche) and Adam Phelan’s (McDonagh Blake) attack setting up a Blair Windsor (Budget Forklifts) and Robbie Williams (McDonagh Blake) move, which when brought back set up a big move by Alex Malone (Bike Bug) and Brody Talbot (Macarthur) who built a nice lead in the middle stages of the race.
Team McDonagh Blake organised the chase with such intensity only around 20 riders where left in contention in the second half of the race.
A very strong six man break consisting of Jackson Law (Road Runner), Blair Martin (KOM), Alli Loutitt (McDonagh Blake), Brody Talbot (Macarthur), Scott Law (Fly V Domestic) and Blair Windsor (Budget Forklifts) quickly built a race winning lead and sprinted it out for the victory.
A mishap in the final corner setting up an easy victory for the National scratch race champion Scott Law defeating his younger brother Jackson with a gap back to Alister Loutitt defending Blair Windsor for third after the action in the final bend.

RESULT: Huskisson Grand Prix – 1. Scott Law (Fly V Domestic), 2. Jackson Law (Road Runner), 3. Alli Loutitt (McDonagh Blake) 4. Blair Windsor (Budget Forklifts) 5. Blair Martin (KOM) 6. Brody Talbot (Macarthur), 7. Robbie Williams (McDonagh Blake)

2009 Dick Smith Cycle Sydney Grand Prix
The inaugural Dick Smith Cycle Sydney Grand Prix is very exciting concept on the domestic Australian Cycling scene with the criterum event contested in front of a huge crowd due to it being part of program of the V8 Super Car final round at Sydney’s Home Bush Bay.
With an excellent field and the atmosphere of the V8 Super Car event the pace was on from the start; the speed of the race and the fast corners ensuring that it would be difficult to break clear of the peloton during the circuit race. Fly V Australia quickly showing their strength and their sprinting power, with inform Jonathan Cantwell taking the early intermediate sprint.
Columbia HTC’s former world track champ Greg Henderson was aggressive through out the event picking up a number of the Intermediate Sprints. Henderson then combining with Bathurst’s Dean Windsor (Drapac Porsche) to initiate the most dangerous attack of the race, the pair joined by another 11 riders late in the race and looked a chance of stealing the event from the sprinters.
However the race came back together on the last lap, only to have Henderson again go off the front this time with National Champion Bernie Sulzberger. A further couple of riders, including Budget Forklifts Blair Windsor, jumping the gap to joining the pair in the lead with the finish almost in sight.
To pulling back this move the big sprinters teams had to sacrifice some henchman  and consequently where left with a bit to do before the sprint. Columbia HTC’s Mark Renshaw slipping into the role he is accustom, leading-out the pelo in the dash to the line. This set up top class sprinter Allan Davis to perfection, the Quick Step finisher kicking to the line to take the win, but only just, with Fly V Australia Jonathan Cantwell coming the long way around Renshaw to get beaten by only centimetres. Total Rush’s Gary Meuller made the podium when he pasted Mark Renshaw on the line, while Pete Fitzpatrick who now mostly races the USA Track and Criterium circuit got under Dean Windsor (Drapac Porsche) in the final corner to take fifth, while Team Budget Forklift Sprinter Cody Stevenson also finished hard to claim a took ten finish.
